This course provides eight sequential structured drawing and painting sessions aiming to unpick some of the theory behind a good and interesting composition in colour. You will work on studies and activities useful for representative and more abstracted contemporary painting, with the opportunity to apply your learning to personal project work.
Course subject matter will generally be extracted from still life and from your own sketches, studies and photographs, for use as a vehicle for understanding aspects of painting, rather than being the focus. Each session will be planned with a specific objective building on the previous one. 'Ways in' or strategies to foster abstraction will be discussed and demonstrated to help you begin and move on, especially at those sticking points when binning it seems the only option. You will be encouraged to take an experimental approach with support from the tutor.
It is challenging, and suitable for intermediate to advanced students who would like help to develop their personal art practice. You will be expected to gather the required reference material and materials for each session and at times, to do some drawing at home.
Each Tuesday Jane will email you a session plan resume as a reminder of the processes and activities covered on the Monday. This includes an outline of what is needed for the following week. It is best to check this on the Tuesday in case there is something you need to do.
