Head and Shoulders with Ruth Swain
Thursday 8th July and Friday 9th July from 10am to 4pm
This is a two-day course on painting the head and shoulders.
Day 1: It will involve drawing the head from a live model, using some basic anatomy rules, marking in the planes, transferring the drawing to canvas and blocking in the shapes.
Day 2: This will be adding the colour in oil (but acrylics if preferred), talking a bit about grisaille techniques, layering, a la prima and finally creating a finished portrait.
Please bring the following materials with you:
Charcoal or 2B pencil for drawing the head.
Acrylic paint: Burnt umber or raw umber and titanium white.
Oil or acrylic paint: Titanium white, cadmium red, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow, ultramarine, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, and other colours of your choice.
Brush cleaner, thinner such as Sansodor or Zest-it
Canvas, oil painting board, oil painting paper or mdf panel (whatever you like to paint on but it must be suitable for oil or acrylics) No smaller than 42cms x 50cms , but any larger size is fine, preferably rectangular, don’t go too big or you won’t finish in the allotted time. Large brushes, size 10 and some smaller ones.
Some brushes will be available to borrow at the school.
