Leonard McComb R.A.
A founder of Sunningwell School of Art, Leonard McComb R.A. – a giant of figurative painting – sought to capture the energy and vibrations that unite all living things.
Nature, Energy, Vibration will be the largest exhibition of the artist’s work since his retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in 1983. It will include 40 works, significant loans from national collections such as The Tate and National Portrait Gallery, and previously unseen major works from the estate.
The exhibition will focus on work inspired by the island of Anglesey, including one of the UK’s largest drawings Rock and Sea, Anglesey (Benllech), 1983.
The exhibition continues the posthumous reappraisal of the artist, alongside a recent monograph published by Beam Editions and a forthcoming documentary.
The Turrill Sculpture Garden in Summertown again welcomes the Sunningwell School of Art sculpture students for a varied and engaging spring exhibition. See work produced by the ‘Lifers’, students who work in clay directly from the life model, and who are taught by sculptor Wilbur Heynes.
The work includes pieces from beginners, improvers and the experienced, who have developed their skills over many years of study and practice. Challenging poses are executed in exciting marks with smaller sculptures as well as larger scale work.
