This course has two modules of 15 weeks each across the academic year. The autumn term and half of the spring term is 15 weeks of drawing, then for the rest of the spring term and the summer term students will take their drawing skills into painting. The modules can be studied independently with students who study the drawing module having priority to return for the painting module.

Drawing Module - 7pm-9pm - Monday September 14th – Monday 23rd November 2026 (half-term Monday October 26th) and then Monday January 4th - Monday February 1st 2027.

Tutor: Alan Franklin.

Not everyone can draw like the great masters - but everyone can draw. When people say they can’t, they usually mean they don’t have the skills or facility to make a drawing that looks like the thing they are looking at, or the subject they are trying to represent. This course will introduce you to the why’s, the what’s and the how’s to help you do just that. You will learn basic techniques, different approaches and different ways of thinking about drawing. Getting it right and getting it wrong, and what to do if your drawing does not quite meet your expectations are all part of the journey. Working with a range of different drawing materials, all supplied as part of the course, you will be introduced to some fundamental techniques aimed at fostering your confidence and improving your skills.

Painting Module - 7pm-9pm - Monday February 8th - Monday 15th March 2027. (Half-term Monday February 15th 2027) and then Monday April 19th - Monday July 5th 2027. (Half-term Monday 31st May 2027.)

Tutor: TBC

Please note, Monday May 3rd 2027 is a bank holiday. There will be no class on this day.

This course starts with a short overview of essential materials such as mediums, brushes and oil paints before getting started on the practical aspect of painting. Beginning with basic mark-making and application techniques, students then progress to the simplest compositions from still life. Students will learn how to manage materials, observe and record.
