Catherine Jennifer. Watercolour Materials List.
MATERIALS:
Please bring TUBE watercolours. If you have pans, you can bring them, but please make sure you also have the 8 tube colours on this list.
Professional watercolour paint is recommended (see below), however if you are more comfortable working with student grade paints, then Winsor and Newton Cotman is the recommended brand. Please do not buy the cheapest paint you can find – with watercolour you get what you pay for, and the cheapest paints are not nice to work with and make learning to paint extremely difficult.
Students will need 8 essential colours:
Student Grade: Winsor and Newton Cotman:
Lemon Yellow Hue
Cadmium Yellow Hue
Alizarin Crimson Hue
Cadmium Red Deep Hue
Turquoise
Ultramarine
Burnt Sienna
Viridian Hue
Professional Watercolours (recommended). There are three options.
Option 1: You can buy 8 individual tubes, any professional brand:
A cool yellow eg. Lemon Yellow
A warm yellow, e.g. Azo yellow / Transparent Yellow
A cool red, eg. Permanent Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone Rose or Quinacridone Magenta
A warm red eg. Pyrrole Scarlet
A cool blue, this must be Pthalo Blue (Green Shade), NOT Cerulean Blue
A warm blue, this must be French Ultramarine (or Ultramarine Blue Warm Shade).
Burnt Sienna (Natural)
Pthalo Green (Blue Shade)
Option 2: You can buy the Daniel Smith Essentials set of 6 paints, plus two more tubes
Daniel Smith, Watercolour Paint – Essentials Set (5ml, Set of 6 tubes.)
This is a good starter set, offering the 2-primary system (a warm and cool yellow, warm and cool blue, warm and cool red). The tubes are small but will last a long time.

If you buy the Daniel Smith Essentials set of 6 then you will also need Burnt Sienna. You can mix Burnt Sienna with French Ultramarine to create beautiful greys similar to Payne’s Grey.
You will also need Pthalo Green (Blue Shade) – this is a transparent green which, if mixed with a cool red, gives you a good strong black.
Option 3:
If you can push the boat out a bit further, then instead of Daniel Smith Essentials Set of 6, you could buy Golden Qor, Watercolour Paint -Introductory Set (5ml, set of 12 tubes.)

These are wonderful paints and will set you up well. This set includes Payne’s Grey, Burnt Sienna and Pthalo Green (Blue Shade).
Brushes: An eradicator brush (for lifting) is a useful addition to your toolkit. Size Small Plus is a good size, click here for a link.
