Landscape Painting

with Joni Duarte

During these sessions we will focus on the study of light and atmosphere and how both elements affect the landscape. We will be combining working a plein-air (directly observing the natural environment) with studio-based study (building a conceptual understanding) to equip students with skills needed to adapt their work to changes in light and weather. This combination of approaches will lead to informed decisions, enabling the work to progress.

This class is suitable for beginners and can be studied alone or in conjunction with Portraiture in Clay on Friday afternoons (1.15pm - 3.45pm) or Life/Portrait Drawing and Painting on Saturday mornings. (10am-12.30pm.) The class has a maximum of 7 places.

Cast Drawing (also known as 'Drawing from the Antique') is a foundational practice in classical art training. Plaster casts provide a simplified, monochromatic subject to help students build an understanding of proportion, form and structure without the distractions of colour or complex textures. Engaging with the plaster casts via analysis and observation develops a simplified understanding of proportions and anatomy. This allows students to focus on creating an illusion of depth and three dimensions in their drawings. This knowledge, when transferred into drawing from life, makes visual problem-solving easier.
