This course has two modules. The spring term is ten weeks of drawing, and the summer term is 10 weeks of painting. Enrolment is on a termly basis until the end of the academic year. The modules can be studied independently, however priority for the painting module will be given to those who have studied on the drawing module.

Drawing Module - 7pm-9pm - Monday January 5th – Monday 16th March. (Half term - Monday February 16th). Tutor: Alan Franklin.

Not everyone can draw like the great masters - but everyone can draw. When people say they can’t, they usually mean they don’t have the skills or facility to make a drawing that looks like the thing they are looking at, or the subject they are trying to represent. This course will introduce you to the why’s, the what’s and the how’s to help you do just that. You will learn basic techniques, different approaches and different ways of thinking about drawing. Getting it right and getting it wrong, and what to do if your drawing does not quite meet your expectations are all part of the journey. Working with a range of different drawing materials, all supplied as part of the course, you will be introduced to some fundamental techniques aimed at fostering your confidence and improving your skills.

Painting Module - 7pm-9pm - Monday April 13th - Monday July 6th. (Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, half-term - Monday May 25th).Please note: There is no class on Monday 11th May. Tutor: Marcus Hodge.

This course starts with a short overview of essential materials such as mediums, brushes and oil paints before getting started on the practical aspect of painting. Beginning with basic mark-making and application techniques, students then progress to the simplest compositions from still life. Students will learn how to manage materials, observe and record.
