“What a Relief”

There are few sculptural styles where the relationship between 2D and 3D become more evident than relief sculpture. During this two-day course students will learn about the range from high relief to low relief and discover that less very often is more.

With a life model, a sketch book and any drawing material a student prefers, an initial drawing will begin its journey into relief sculpture.  From this sketch, and using clay, the 2D will become 3D and later the clay will be fired in our kiln.

By following this process of beginning with high relief and a deeper and rounder sculpture, each student will progress to repeat their work in low relief, a shallower and flatter sculpture.  This journey will demonstrate how much information can be conveyed with delicate changes of surface contour.

Students more accustomed to working in 2D will find a new avenue into the 3D world of expression. Students with more experience in sculpting the human form will learn that the subtlest of alterations to a surface make significant differences.  Every student will find in this course a great relief.
